SM in LE – mini update

Hello cyber world,

It has been a while since I wrote something. I feel to shut down my website but I always remove that thought and still believe I will be writing again on it.

Many of you are asking where I have been or what I have been working on lately. I have to say, I have been very quiet for a while and I am not talking that much on sm either.

Since I moved to a new position at my work, I have been involved in many great projects but I was not the front person for any of them. Instead, I was the person conducting the project, helping others to understand why we need to move forward and be innovative all the time. It was time for others to be the front person.

It has been a very busy summer for me. Spend a week in Quebec, talking about SM in law enforcement and went to Windsor for another presentation to the CACP, presenting with a good friend of mine, Deputy Peter Sloly from Toronto Police.

This presentation was a chance for me to update the rest of the country on what is going on with SM. In 2010, I was in Edmonton CACP conference, doing the same presentation with other people. At that time, only 15-20% of law enforcement were on SM, which is not that much vs UK law enforcement. A year later, after traveling all across the country talking on SM, I saw the impact that some of my LE friends and I did by talking about SM. By Aug. 2011, 30% of Canadian agencies are on SM. Still not that much but it is an increase and I believe we are going to see a bigger increase within a year. BC is the #1 province with more then 80% of agencies on SM.

We have seen TPS launching there SM unit. Great initiative by Dep. Sloly, Sgt. Burrows and Cst. Scott Mills. I have to say, I don’t agree with everything they are doing. One thing I really like is their training. This is so cool. Every agencies should train their staff on SM so they know how it works.

In the next year, many cool stuff should happen. One of them is the SMILE conference in Vancouver in March. I am proud of helping developing the content and putting together an all French panel with the SQ and Montreal Police. I am working on another big project which I hope will take form in 2012.

Right now, I am focusing to develop new tools to help the members to do their work more efficient and and more effective. If you embrace technology, you can save a lot of time and $ by being innovative. As well, working on generate more conversation with the community. An example, we changed our block watch website to a new platform with a blog. Now people can talk to our block watch person and our staff can post the latest info. Being on SM means talking and listening. If you don’t do both, there is no reason to be on it.

Anyhow, I hope I can write more often.

Later!

Hervey
